The Neversink Library champions books from around the world that have been overlooked, under appreciated, looked askance at, or foolishly ignored. What its about: The autobiography of poet W.H.Davies before he became famous. Praised by Osbert Sitwell for his “primitive splendour and directness,” Davies evokes the beauty and frontier violence of turn-of-the-century America in prose that George Bernard Shaw commended to “literary experts for its style alone.” The insurgent wanderlust that found an American voice in Jack London and Jack Kerouac is expressed here in a raucous true adventure story by the man Shaw called “the incorrigible Supertramp who wrote this amazing book.” “All the wildness had been taken out of me,” Davies wrote, “and my adventures after this were not of my own seeking.” His foot was crushed and his leg amputated. His father died when he was three years old, and after his mother’s subsequent remarriage, Davies was raised by his grandparents. Crossing Canada to join the “Klondyke” gold rush, Davies fell while hopping a train. Poet and writer William Henry Davies was born in Newport, Wales. From 1893 to 1899 he was schooled by the hard men of the road, disdaining regular work and subsisting by begging. Davies surprised his contemporaries with the unlikeliest portrait of the artist as a young man ever written.Īfter a delinquent childhood Davies renounced home and apprenticeship and at twenty-two sailed to America-the first of more than a dozen Atlantic crossings, often made by cattle boat. An untutored Welsh tramp who became a popular poet acclaimed by the conservative Georgians and the vanguard Ezra Pound alike, W.

The dangers to which we are exposed from our Women must now be manifest to the meanest capacity of Spaceland. When her side is turned towards us, we see her as a straight line when the end containing her eye or mouth - for with us these two organs are identical - is the part that meets our eye, then we see nothing but a highly lustrous point but when the back is presented to our view, then - being only sub-lustrous, and, indeed, almost as dim as an inanimate object - her hinder extremity serves her as a kind of Invisible Cap. Then, with your eye on the level of the table, look at it side-ways, and you see the whole length of it but look at it end-ways, and you see nothing but a point, it has become practically invisible. However, a few words will make it clear to the most unreflecting. This ought, I think, to be apparent without any explanation. Add to this the power of making herself practically invisible at will, and you will perceive that a Female, in Flatland, is a creature by no means to be trifled with.īut here, perhaps, some of my younger Readers may ask how a woman in Flatland can make herself invisible. For, if a Soldier is a wedge, a Woman is a needle being, so to speak, all point, at least at the two extremities. If our highly pointed Triangles of the Soldier class are formidable, it may be readily inferred that far more formidable are our Women. The Tutor's Daughter is what might happen if Northanger Abbey and The Secret Garden had a baby, and maybe if Persuasion were its auntie. Who does Emma hear playing the pianoforte, only to find the music room empty? Who sneaks into her room at night? Who rips a page from her journal, only to return it with a chilling illustration? A human bitten or drained by a vampire doesn’t rise as a vampire - they are just dead. Although vampires can drink the blood of humans it has little nutritional value for them and they need to drink the blood of other vampires (of the opposite sex) to survive. At the start of their lives vampires seem like humans, they have no special strengths and can go out in daylight but they go through a dangerous transition to vampire hood in their mid twenties. In the Black Dagger novels the vampires are a separate species to humans, to be a vampire you have to have been born carrying vampire blood. The Black Dagger Brotherhood is an ancient order of warrior vampires who defend their race against the lessers, vampire slayers who have been recruited by the Omega (an evil supernatural being who wants all vampires destroyed.) There are six warriors in the Brotherhood and these warriors are all that stand between the civilian vampires and the extinction of the vampire species at the hands of the lessers. Set in present day Caldwell, New York ‘Dark Lover’ is the first in a series of novels about the Black Dagger Brotherhood. 'A moving and captivating tale of survival and hope. And, under the shadow of the hangman's noose, he begins to realise that the truth may not be enough to save him. But Mahmood is secure in his innocence in a country where, he thinks, justice is served. It is true that he has been getting into trouble more often since his Welsh wife Laura left him. So when a shopkeeper is brutally killed and all eyes fall on him, Mahmood isn't too worried. He is many things, in fact, but he is not a murderer. He is a father, chancer, some-time petty thief. Mahmood Mattan is a fixture in Cardiff's Tiger Bay, 1952, which bustles with Somali and West Indian sailors, Maltese businessmen and Jewish families. It demands your attention, luring you back in, and the comparison to August’s music is an easy one, but it works. But when it’s right there in the title - when things have gone from savage to dark - that’s practically to be expected. This book starts out pretty dark and only becomes darker as it continues. But when Kate comes back to town, it’s because there’s a new monster to fight. Meanwhile, Kate Harker is in Prosperity, another city, doing her very best impression of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (complete with her own Scooby Gang). Our Dark Duet picks up six months after Savage Song leaves off, opening on August Flynn now completely focused on his mission as a member of the Flynn Task Force, keeping the monsters plaguing V-City at bay and helping those he can. This is the kind of book that leaves you affected after you read it. Suffice it to say that there is so much of a ride in this book that I almost wish I could go back and experience it for the first time all over again. And, having read This Savage Song last year, I knew I would be in for a ride. It was one of the books I’d looked forward to most this year. I saved Our Dark Duet for last for a number of reasons. Yours truly has read a lot of different books this week. By Cheryl Wassenaar 5 years ago Our Dark Duet outstrips This Savage Song by a wide margin, ensnaring readers from the prelude and holding on through the final page. It joins the rest of her novels on my All-Time Favorites list. Instant favorite! I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It's a beautiful, unique, one-of-a-kind, enthralling work of art that I could not and did not want to put down.
